NGAL rises quickly in patients with acute kidney injury, leading to elevated NGAL levels both in urine and plasma. Quantitative determination of NGAL using the turbidimetric Gentian NGAL Immunoassay, can identify renal injury before the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of the kidneys is reduced, thus preventing development of chronic kidney disease and renal failure.

Gentian NGAL Immunoassay Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin

Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) is a protein secreted by neutrophils and damaged epithelial and tubular cells. The levels of NGAL rise quickly in response to renal injury particularly caused by ischemia and nephrotoxins [1]. NGAL can be detected both in plasma and urine [2] before any reduction in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) [3]. Monitoring NGAL levels in plasma and urine is relevant in clinical settings where patients have enhanced risk of developing renal injury. These settings include cardiac surgery [4] and ICU admittance [5]. NGAL is also a marker for renal injury due to delayed graft function in renal transplantation patients [6], and can be used to distinguish patients with mild acute pancreatitis from patients with severe acute pancreatitis [7].

Assay Principle

The Gentian NGAL Immunoassay is a Particle-Enhanced Turbidimetric immunoassay (PETIA) for in vitro diagnostic testing of NGAL in human urine and plasma samples. The assay is rapidly performed in only 10 minutes and can be applied on a wide range of clinical chemistry analysers.

Calibrator Standardisation

The calibrator for the Gentian NGAL Immunoassay is available as a 6-point pre-diluted calibrator kit. The calibrator is traceable to a master calibrator. The master calibrator is assigned using another commercial method and adjusted using the Biuret method.
